TMJ Joint Dysfunction

How Physiotherapy, Remedial Massage and Exercise can help

Temporomandibular joint disorder or more commonly known as TMJ is jaw pain.
Muscles involved with this condition are masseter, temporalis, lateral and medial ptygeroid.
It can involve displacement at an articular disc located in your jaw.

Common symptoms include
– pain around the jaw
– clicking as you’re opening and closing your mouth
– Jaw pain when chewing/biting
– headaches or tension around the temple

Causes can include:
– joint stiffness
– muscular dysfunction
– stress
– teeth grinding
– posture
– hypermobility
– neck dysfunction and/or whiplash injuries
– dental procedures

For persistent pain, jaw physiotherapy can be quite effective in treating TMJ. Your physiotherapist will conduct a thorough examination to assess jaw range and movement as well as check on muscle tension to locate source of pain. Your physiotherapist will then conduct treatment and work with you to manage your jaw pain better.
